Sometimes the mountains tell a story; one need only listen. Ulas Samchuk’s novel "The Mountains Speak" has it all: the brutal events of the First World War, the passionate love of a Hutsul woman and a Hungarian woman, and the strong characters of courageous men. The story unfolds amidst the blessed Ukrainian Carpathians. Ukrainians had come to recognize themselves as a distinct people, yet they were forced to participate in a fratricidal war imposed upon their own land by two empires—Russia and Austria-Hungary.
